PostSubject: Freaking windshield.   Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:55 pm

I think I hit a bug at 45 mph on State Street and it cracked my windshield. I'm not even kidding. We hit a bug 2 days ago and my son was like "eeeeeew nasty!" and it left a massive goo streak. I think it was a cricket or a grasshopper. He was riding in the passenger seat. Today my wife was driving and I was sitting in the passenger seat and notice a hairline crack about 1/2" long in the same area. What the heck? Did a bug seriously crack my windshield? It reminded me of the time I bought a softball bat that was infamous for denting and I thought everybody was overstating it. I went out and hit a tennis ball and put a dent in the $300 bat. A tennis ball! The FJ's windshield is the Demarini of auto glass apparently.

I am going to try one of those cheapo $10 Permatex windshield kits and hope it seals it up enough to keep it from spreading. If anybody has a better suggestion let me know. I don't want to go to Technaglass or one of those places as they took me to court once over a windshield replacement they did and my insurance denied the payment. So I go back and pay cash a month later (after insurance denies the claim) and they somehow lose record of my payment and start the phone harassment. I just keep telling them I paid it and to lay off. Then I get a summons on my door of my apartment.

I show up for court with my receipt signed by the lady who was calling every other day for $227.50 and the case was dismissed. Hilarious. The funniest part was that they kept harassing me on the phone to try to get me to pay court costs because it was somehow my fault and if I had "paid sooner" then they never would have "lost track of it" and "had to" sue me. WTF? I told them I'd pay court costs only on the lawsuit I was filing for harassment. They stopped calling.

Anyway.... sorry for the rant for the day. If any of you guys know of a good solution for fixing a tiny line hairline crack let me know. If any of you are glass experts and want to fix it for some cash money and a pizza let me know. I just don't want to deal with insurance and blah blah blah. I just want it fixed so it doesn't spread. I've only owned the thing 2 weeks. Geezo peezo. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Feels good to vent doesn't it.

Don't fret the windshield thing. I have yukon, a TJ and the FJ. The FJ gets twice the mileage on it as my wife and daughter drive the others and here si the count
Yukon 126000 miles 4 windhsield
TJ 29000 miles 3 windshield
FJ 73000 miles 1 windshield

The point is they all have crappy winshields jeeps and fjs are just steeper of an angle so they have a tendance to get a much more direct hit rather than a glancing blow. My suggestion is go have it done most places will do it for 10 bucks. I have used safelite for all my replacements and have been very pleased with the results and the company.
